Replacing low-intensity cattle pasture with oil palm conserves dung beetle functional diversity when paired with forest protection

چکیده

Meeting rising demand for oil palm whilst minimizing the loss of tropical biodiversity and associated ecosystem functions is a core conservation challenge. One potential solution focusing expansion high-yielding crops on presently low-yielding farmlands alongside protecting nearby forests that can enhance provision functions. A key question how this would impact invertebrate functional diversity. We focus in Colombian Llanos, where plantations are replacing improved cattle pastures forest fragments, dung beetles, which play roles nutrient cycling secondary seed dispersal. show richness diversity beetles greater than pasture, metrics did not differ between remnant forest. The abundance-size class profile was more similar to had lower abundances smallest largest beetles. abundance tunneling rolling forest, while higher cover increased diurnal generalist-feeding landscapes. This suggests prioritizing agricultural development pasture will have positive effects highlights need protection maintain functioning within

Do riparian reserves support dung beetle biodiversity and ecosystem services in oil palm-dominated tropical landscapes?

Agricultural expansion and intensification are major threats to global biodiversity, ecological functions, and ecosystem services. The rapid expansion of oil palm in forested tropical landscapes is of particular concern given their high biodiversity. Identifying management approaches that maintain native species and associated ecological processes within oil palm plantations is therefore a prio...

Does logging and forest conversion to oil palm agriculture alter functional diversity in a biodiversity hotspot?

Forests in Southeast Asia are rapidly being logged and converted to oil palm. These changes in land-use are known to affect species diversity but consequences for the functional diversity of species assemblages are poorly understood. Environmental filtering of species with similar traits could lead to disproportionate reductions in trait diversity in degraded habitats. Here, we focus on dung be...

Designing oil palm landscapes to retain biodiversity using insights from a key ecological indicator group

Oil palm expansion threatens biodiverse ecosystems across the tropics. However, palm oil is a widely used and profitable crop, so identifying strategies that mitigate the impact of oil palm expansion on biodiversity is important. Riparian reserves (strips of forest along rivers) are protected in many countries for hydrological reasons and also support species that would not otherwise persist in...

Negative Impacts of Human Land Use on Dung Beetle Functional Diversity

The loss of biodiversity caused by human activity is assumed to alter ecosystem functioning. However our understanding of the magnitude of the effect of these changes on functional diversity and their impact on the dynamics of ecological processes is still limited. We analyzed the functional diversity of copro-necrophagous beetles under different conditions of land use in three Mexican biospher...

Scale-Dependence of Processes Structuring Dung Beetle Metacommunities Using Functional Diversity and Community Deconstruction Approaches

Community structure is driven by mechanisms linked to environmental, spatial and temporal processes, which have been successfully addressed using metacommunity framework. The relative importance of processes shaping community structure can be identified using several different approaches. Two approaches that are increasingly being used are functional diversity and community deconstruction. Func...
